Uncommon Vision - Finding Art in the Ordinary
When I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful pattern of our dog’s hair, I knew I had to photograph it! I didn’t expect much. But when I looked at the image, it struck me: it looked like an abstract painting. Delicate strands tangled together like brushstrokes. Tones and soft textures layered in a way that almost felt intentional, like a natural piece of fine art. It reminded me that there is magic in the mundane—if we’re willing to look at it differently. This is the essence of creative photography: making the ordinary feel extraordinary. When you can’t find an uncommon subject, take an uncommon photo of a common one. A crumpled napkin. A broken window. A sidewalk puddle reflecting the sky like a portal. These are not headline-grabbing moments, but with the right light, angle, or framing, they can spark curiosity, emotion, or even wonder. Great photographers and artists aren’t necessarily the ones who travel the farthest—they’re the ones who see what others overlook. They don’t wait for inspiration to strike; they coax it out of overlooked corners. They shoot shadows, textures, patterns, reflections—things we pass every day without noticing. Next time you feel stuck creatively, resist the urge to search for something new. Instead, look around you. Turn the camera toward the familiar. Ask yourself: what if I looked at this from one inch off the ground? Through a glass of water? What if I cropped it so tightly it became something unrecognizable? Uncommon photos aren’t about rarity—they’re about perspective. So don’t underestimate that dog hair. It might just be your next masterpiece.
